Introduction to CastrilCastril de la Pena is located north east of the province of Granada and is adjacent to the province of Jaen. Located on the A326 between Huescar and Pozo Alcon the Sierra de Castril Natural Park is also adjacent to the Natural Park of Cazorla, Segura and Las Villas and covers approximately 12,154 hectacres.Over
the last few years Castril has become popular with tourists (mainly Spanish
and French) who come to see its lake, river and abundance of water through
springs in the mountains, and enjoy the popular walk in Castril itself
"El Paseo Colgante" is known to the British as the "Gorge
Walk". Castril itself is fairly lively during July and August but the remainder of the year the village is enjoyed by locals. Every Friday Castril holds a small market, where you can buy your fruit and veg, clothes, ecological products, natural rugs and pottery. If you fancy a Barter - here is the place to try your luck! You will
also see men walking around selling things, e.g. Fans (!), and Fishing
Rods, again - barter with them and you could get yourself a bargain!! There are 3 small supermarkets, 2 butchers, 3 bakers, 2 banks, a post office, medical centre, pharmacy and town hall. Two schools cover ages 3 - 14 years old inclusive. There are also 8 bars in the village offering a range of tapas. Meson Romero and Zafra also offer a range of food. From June to September the community pool opens. Click here for more information. Lakes in the area include Lake Portillo (Castril), Lake Bolera (on the A326 towards Pozo Alcon), San Clemente (off the A326 towards Huescar) and the largest lake in the region, Lake Negraton which is located between Cuevas del Campo and Freila.
